Who is in fact is Slavenka Drakulić? A question so simple it is almost banal – yet the answer is, naturally, infinitely complex! However, in Slavenka or about Pain, Petar Krelja has managed to use his subtle, yet simultaneously brave documentary film scissors, to carve out a Slavenka who will surprise any viewer, those who only know her from afar, as a public figure, as well as her closest friends and family who will watch the film with eyes wide open. In its essence, Krelja’s conversation with Slavenka – Croatian wither, journalist and feminist, but also in her other ‘roles’ – woman, mother, daughter, wife, friend – is minimalistic in the simplicity of its execution, though precisely because of it, impressive in its nakedness. All the more so, since the speech of the protagonist, and the storyteller in voice-over, is juxtaposed to different materials interpolated by the author in a collage technique.
