Ferdinand Glad Bach: ‘My role model is Marlon Brando, and what bothers me most is lack of self-confidence.’
Towards the 20th Youth Film Festival & 8th Four River Film Festival we present you Ferdinand Glad Bach, last year's winner of the best actor award in the competition of Four River Film Festival films. Although he just stepped into his third decade, Bach doesn`t lack media attention and experience. For years he has starred in the popular Danish TV series 'Rita' and additional engagements have been coming one after another. In the text that follows he opened up his soul and discovered how important confidence is in the acting business, but he also said a thing or two about his film role model.
When did you start your acting career and what was your first role?
Ferdinand: My professional acting career began when I was 18 with a role in the Danish TV series 'Rita'. As that was my first chance to play on a national TV show I was quite confused and often insecure in my work.
What are you doing momentarily, do you have any new projects?
Ferdinand: I've just returned from New York where I attended Theater and Film Institute Lee Strasberg for six months. I was lucky I returned home, to Denmark, in January so I didn’t miss shooting of the third season of 'Rita' - a series that used to be wind to my tail. In addition, I spent the beginning of the year filming several short films with important names of the Danish film.
Do you have a role model in the film world?
Ferdinand: Marlon Brando - actor of all actors, a pioneer of method acting, who among other things stood out due to his interesting personality and due to his fight for the minorities' rights. So Brando was also an activist for civil and environmental rights and a member of the Indian movement.
At last year's edition of FRFF you won the prize for best actor starring in the film 'Unusual'. What was the best and what was the worst part of shooting that film?
Ferdinand: I'm amazed that I won this award, especially because I was not overly pleased with how I staged the character that I played in the film. At that moment I simply could not get into the character, I missed the toughness that the other actors in the film had. The best part of the filming was informal communication with other actors and the atmosphere on the set, and the worst my lack of self-confidence. I just did not live that film at that point, and that is the key to success. I'm probably too self-critical, but it is how it is…
Although the film industry is your everyday life, and maybe you cannot look at it as most people, is there a film which is best to you?
Ferdinand: I really love watching films, but if I had to define which is best to me, I would say the 'Zodiac'. I very easily immerse myself into a film, and 'Zodiac' has a particular infectious atmosphere. In this film everything is somehow eerie and mysterious. It's one of those films you're talking about for days after you have watched it, and don`t even get me started on acting.
