Alison McCloskey
From the age of 15, Alison developed a passion for cinema by attending the annual Cork Film Festival, showcasing the best of independent world cinema, documentary and short films. After graduating from art school, she moved to London, where she discovered opportunities to study screenwriting, animation and Super 8 filmmaking.

She began her career in film education in 2002 as the main tutor and coordinator for Youth Animation and Media, running free filmmaking workshops for young people in South East London. Under her leadership, YAM facilitated the production of over 150 short films by local children and created a festival “Yam on Rye”, one of the first festivals showcasing the work of young people in London. She later became the Director of the Flipside Youth Film Festival, training a team of youth volunteers to enable them to plan, curate and present screenings independently. Since 2012, Alison has been the Project Manager of the British Film Institute’s Future Film Academy, a talent development program for aspiring filmmakers aged 16-19. Students learn about the script to screen process of filmmaking through a series of masterclasses with industry professionals. They learn how to produce film in a variety of formats, from Super 8 and 16mm film to Black Magic URSA digital cinema cameras. She also teaches young people how to get funding for their films and plan their journey through distribution and eventually finding audiences.

In her work with young people, Alison tries to encourage a regard for cinema as an art form and as a vehicle for personal and social enrichment. She emphasizes the responsibility of young filmmakers to innovate and reinvent cinema in the midst of a commercially led mainstream industry and to question the purpose for the projects they undertake in this context.
