Six shorts in Tuškanac Cinema - program
25 FPS 2006 Selection
10th of October 2006 at 20 h / 54'
After the second successful issue of 25 FPS, whose organizers
in cooperation with Croatian Film Club’s Association conceived
the idea of the realization of these programs, the festival
contently sails on the exciting sea of contemporary film
hybrids rooted in the distant history of experimental film.
25 FPS, which successfully pointed all its lights to the
short experimental film and video, and in the media rather
loudly stresses the need for closer coverage of the "experimental"
short meter film life, presents part of its official competition
program. The selection was made by the the 25 FPS organizers
and three person jury: Peter Tscherkassky (AT), Takahiko
Iimura (JP) and Diana Nenadić (HR).
Iceland: Cold Hearts
24th of October 2006 at 20 h / 92’
The mysterious and far away country mostly recognized by
prosaic geysers in this region is more known by its music
scene dominated by the world known diva, Björk, than by its
film production.
However, a few years ago pilgrims to the
festival in the Istrian hills had a chance to see beautiful
Iceland feature film "Nói albínói" (2003;
Dagur Kári), and all those following the music video clips
industry have probably noticed quite a number of musicians,
but also directors with the Iceland passport.
Cold Hearts is
therefore an excellent introduction to what we might call
music/film scene, a perfect package that connects the best
of visuals and music under the Iceland denominator, everything
from reaching in experimental film space to animation, feature
and documentary miniatures, from the recognizable new wave
veterans Sigur Rós and the band Múm, whose video clip directed
fantastic, though British, duo Semiconductor, to exceptional
music/visual masters Arni & Kinski, whose best known
project is the band Gus Gus.

Sound and Music Videos
7th of November 2006 at 20 h / 78’
Since MTV started
in 1981 music and visuals have had best encounters in the
music video clip, although even before that they were connected
in a similar form by "experimental" production which very
early became aware of the importance of the sound and music
in combination with visual background. Today it is hard to
say what is the background – visuals or sound, but the answer
to this question is generally provided by the Western civilization
based on the culture of "watching" as well as the very banal
fact that we will pay attention to what is predetermined
as "form".
However, since "video did not kill radio star",
but capitalism killed music television, one of the places
where we can now watch music video clips are film festivals,
which, though, preferring visuals, still at least acknowledge
"artistic" achievements of such short form. It could be said
that generally popular video clips by hyper-production forced
music televisions to turn more to commercials and "reality
shows", making video clips find their place under the sun
on festivals. This has probably been enhanced by the interest
of those who experiment to direct their careers to a more
commercial, more profitable or just more challenging form.
So
even the program before you is not a video clip program,
the other works use somewhat similar poetics – fast editing,
witty remark, exceptional visuals and pitching in only a
couple of minutes – which can be considered the basic elements
of video clips. Still, some authors are primarily known from
the "experimental story" (Dariusz Kowalski), some hail from
advertising (Gints Apsits), others are oriented to animation
processes and flamboyance of digital image (Patrick Doan),
while some are already old acquaintances to everybody who
follow contemporary "artistic" video clip production (Corine
Stübi, Shynola)…
Gathered in a same place like this they
definitely promise enjoyment for eyes and ears.

Art
and Cinema

Although already in the title it suggests "experimental
film for the beginners" stressing the artistic character
of the short film form, this program is more than appropriate
introduction in contemporary experimental production. Here
it should be particularly good to point out "exotic" countries
from which certain works come, such as Lebanon, Slovakia
or Russia, numerous new promising directors (Takeshi Kushida)
and some very experienced in the field of experiment (Gustav
Deutsch), then works already shown on various festivals,
for example the Amsterdam IDFA ("On a Wednesday Night in
Tokyo") or in Oberhausen ("Beyond the Usual Limits", "WA")
as well as various "genre" directions from documentary and
feature film, to music video clip and to what we could name
recorded performance or experimental film.

École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs
5th of December 2006 at 20 h / 60'
This program is
a selection of the recent works from the Paris-based École
nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs (ENSAD), founded
in 1766. From the very beginning, school aimed to develop
crafts relating to the arts in order to improve the quality
of manufactured goods. Through a rigorous and demanding apprenticeship
in the arts, the school strove to combine technique and culture,
intelligence and sensitivity, so as to enable the more gifted
artisans to develop into creative artists. School's goal
is the artistic, scientific and technical training of creative
students capable of designing, promoting and developing all
manner of works in the field of decorative arts, and the
direction of research in the same sectors. The teaching offered
at the ENSAD focuses on drawing and visual arts for all students.
It encourages link-ups between the different disciplines
by means of shared classes and team work on multidisciplinary
subjects. Its areas of expertise are: creation, design, execution,
artistic management. Animation, industrial design, photography,
scenography, clothes design, video are just several of ENSAD's
successful and prize winning ateliers.

Reference to Difference: Croatian video 1994/1996, Zagreb
1996
19th of December 2006 at 20 h / 64’
In the begging
of 1996 media group FX Interzone initiated a program of video
works that was realized under the name Reference
to difference. Seven authors and their videos, made from
the year 1994 to 1996, were included in this compilation
created for presentation of Croatian video scene in country
and abroad - Vlado Zrnić, Milan Bukovac, Igor Kuduz, Simon
Bogojević Narath, Davor Mezak, Vladislav Knežević, and Mario
Kalogjera.
Program was realized and supported by Institute
for Contemporary Art SCCA Zagreb and Croatian Ministry of
Culture and it was presented in the galleries from Germany
and Moldavia to Slovenia and Canada. "This presentation of
Croatian video is a sort of unique but significant event.
It is unique as an act of group self-organization, a collection
put together by the artists themselves. It is significant
because it indicates the artists’ will to take the matter
in their own hands – to indicate recognition of an art-field
and organize a public reception in a situation where both
are seriously insufficient in Croatia. Actually, video artist
are working in a quite rarified public atmosphere. (…)
It’s
a well leveled selection, consisting of highly articulated
and subtle works, of remarkable conceptual and imaginal difference
among themselves."

Difference,
Zagreb, 1996)
