The visual complexity of the film Happy together by Wong Kar-wai

The film Happy Together, a peculiar story of two lovers who come from Hong Kong to Argentina, is one of the most complete and most impressive films in the opus of a famous director from Hong Kong, Wong Kar-wai. In cooperation with director of photography Christopher Doyle, Kar-wai manages to express emotional states of his characters and underline their personality by his choice of photography. Green tones associate the passing of time; blue ones depict the atmosphere of sadness, and photography with bright and intense colours follows parts which are abundant with energy and liveliness. Except photography, the director pays particular attention to editing, as well as to the frames in which the present emotional states of the characters accentuated by motion faster or slower than usual. Wong Kar-wai’s approach testifies of a director with an exceptionally defined creative point of view. His work is defined by visual narration, the atmosphere of certain scenes; character’s personalities and their emotional conditions are created in a visual manner. His film world is made by pictures, not by words.
