Kaurismäki Phenomenon
The text marked the retrospective of the entire work by Finish director Aki Kaurismäki in Zagreb. It analyzes political and stylistic aspects of his film as well as his genre eclectics and roots. The emphasis is placed on his first trilogy (Varjoja paratiisissa, 1986; Ariel, 1988; Tulitikkutehtaan tyttö, 1990), the so-called Working-class or Proletarian Trilogy, and the second, the so-called Helsinki or Loser Trilogy (Kauas pilvet karkaavat, 1996; Mies vailla menneisyyttä, 2002; Laitakaupungin valot, 2006). The author also adds the third, »rock-trilogy« dedicated to the band called Leningrad Cowboys — Leningrad Cowboys Go America (1989), Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses (1994), and Total Balalaika Show (1994).
