INTERPRETATIONS
One day in the life of Andrei Arseniyevich
Late Russian director Andrei Arseniyevich Tarkovsky is particularly admired by contemporary filmmakers (A. Sokurov, S. Soderbergh, and others), who often pay him a tribute. French director Chris Marker took a different path. His documentary One Day in life of Andrei Arseniyevich, is a recording of Tarkovsky during the last months of his life, and directly speaks about his attitudes towards life and art. With the help of elaborate metaphors, Marker connects circumstances of Tarkovsky’s life with the thematic of travel often present in his films. Furthermore, he accurately picks out great director’s visual stylistic procedures, talks about the influence great painters had on him and the way he was able to express his life philosophy in those procedures. One Day in the life of Andrei Arseniyevich is an excellent piece of work, uniting an analytical approach to Tarkovsky’s opus with narrative lightness and poetic atmosphere. Marker’s contribution to film art is greater than that of most of the followers of this great Russian director. Elvis Leniæ |
