In memoriam
Mate Relja — Profession as Life Choice
(Šibenik, 29 August 1922 — Zagreb, 1 August 2006)
An obituary of the
Croatian film director Mate Relja. The first part of the
text, written by the leading Croatian film scholar Ante
Peterlić, gives a comprehensive interpretative analysis
of three films directed by Relja, war film Point 905
(Kota 905, 1960), war children film Dangerous Way
(Opasni put), the winner of the Golden Lion in Venice
for children’s film (1963), and famous children’s film Train
in the Snow (Vlak u snijegu, 1976).
The second part
of the text deals with Relja’s professional work and describes
Relja as a private person, searched-for assistant director,
fighter for union and professional rights, and describes
his troubles with the political system that prevented his
work on the film which is the reason why he made only three
feature films. Ante Peterlić |
