Zagreb '98
Painting the movement and soul
13 International Festival of Film Animation, Zagreb’98
With its excellent organisation and the
excellent selection (about sixty films in competition out
of eight hundred applications), the Zagreb ’98 resurrected
the success of its golden years, the time when it was one
of the few top festivals of animation films in the world.
The jury (Roul Servais, Belgia; Sayoko Kinoshita, Japan;
Natalia Chernyshova, Ukraina; Peter Dougherty, USA; Milan
Blažeković, Croatia) had an extremely difficult job because
there were more outstanding films worth of award then there
were awards. The life achievement award went to the Italian
animator Bruno Bozzetto.
A number of special programs accompanied
the competition (retrospectives of Zlatko Grgić, Renzo
Kinoshite, Vadim V. Kručevski; national retrospectives
of Austrian and Italian animation, student films from Germany,
Russia and Croatia, and Animania program of the
last two year animation output). The specific achievements
of individual films (with the prominent participation of
Russian authors) are reviewed: Rusalka by the Russian
Aleksandar Petrov; The Albatross by the British
Paul Bush; Major’s Nose by the Russian Mihail Lisovoj; Rose
Doll by the Russian Valentin Olsvang; Sientje by
the Dutch Christe Moesker; Flatworld by the Brittish
Daniel Greaves; student film The Cake by the Croat
Daniel Šuljić and awarded British film One Eye by
Liana Dognini; The Long Journey by the Russian Andrej
Khrjanoviski; I move, so I am by Gerrit van Dijk;
the US film Gery’s Game by Jan Pinkava. Rada Šešić |
