FROM THE HISTORY OF CROATIAN CINEMA
Forensic feminist in action!
(Nice Dead Girls: why did first Croatian celluloid lesbians have to die?)
In the analysis of the first
Croatian film that explicitly features a lesbian relationship,
the author of the review shows how Dalibor Matanić with
his film Nice Dead Girls exploits lesbians/women
for the purpose of social criticism, strengthening (instead
of deconstructing) heteropatriarchical mechanisms of Croatian
cultural-artistic and socio-political reality. On the other
hand, directing attention towards interpretatively crucial
function of the narrator and the structure of film narration,
the author points to the possibility of subversive reading
in which gender, sexual and political stereotypes are revealed
as products of individual consciousness of the protagonist,
instead of the collective (»objective«) consciousness,
that is to say, consciousness of the filmmaker. Mima Simić |
