The Reality Of Non-Real — Repulsion, Images
Dream presentation has always been intriguing for filmmakers. After Mélies it became obvious that the nature of film is the creation of make-believe reality, but it reflects also in the possibility of making appearances realistic. Everything we see on the screen has its place on an imaginary scale of reality. In this sense, schizophrenia — a specifically psycho-pathological condition — is very compatible with the nature and possibilities of film medium. The author validates this statement with the analysis of two modernist style films imbedded in the surrealistic tradition — Repulsion, 1965, by Roman Polanski and Images, 1972 by Robert Altman. Two directors used schizophrenia in order to externalise inner worlds of their protagonists. Pinpointing the possibilities of film, they also spoke about the influence of the outside world on them.
